Scale Overview
The Emotional Stress Reaction Questionnaire – ESRQ was developed by Gerry Larsson (1987). It is designed to measure Emotional Stress Reaction. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Indifference, Positive Emotions, Mobilization, Negative Emotions.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = The word does not correspond to how you felt right then, 2 = The word partly corresponds to how you felt right then, 3 = The word fairly well corresponds to how you felt right then, 4 = The word completely corresponds to how you felt right then.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 6 to 24. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Negative Emotion: 6 – 11
- Moderate Negative Emotion: 12 – 17
- High Negative Emotion: 18 – 24

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 1 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
