Scale Overview
The Emotion Awareness Questionnaire – EAQ was developed by Carolien Rieffe, Paul Oosterveld, Anne C. Miers, Mark Meerum Terwogt, Verena Ly, K.V. Petrides, C. Cowan, A.C. Tolland (2007). It is designed to measure Emotion Awareness. The scale is intended for use with Children and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 30 items organized into 6 factors/subscales: Differentiating Emotions, Verbal Sharing of Emotions, Not Hiding Emotions, Bodily Awareness, Attending to Others’ Emotions, Analyses of Emotions.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = not true, 1 = sometimes true, 2 = true.
The scale includes 20 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Emotional Awareness: 0 – 20
- Moderate Emotional Awareness: 21 – 40
- High Emotional Awareness: 41 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.64 to 0.77 across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
