Economic Locus of Control Scale (ELCS)
Measures individual beliefs regarding the causes of financial success, wealth, and poverty, distinguishing between internal control, chance, powerful others, and macro-economic factors.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Economic Locus of Control Scale (ELCS) was developed by Adrian Furnham (1986). It is designed to measure Economic Locus of Control. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 40 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Internal Control, Chance, Powerful Others, Macro-Economic.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Internal Control | 1,2,3,5,7,12,17,19,20,23,24,31,35,36,37,38 | 16 |
| Chance | 6,13,14,15,18,30,32,34,39,40 | 10 |
| Powerful Others | 9,21,27,33 | 4 |
| Macro-Economic | 4,8,10,11,16,22,25,26,28,29 | 10 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Slightly Disagree, 4 = Neutral / Neither Agree nor Disagree, 5 = Slightly Agree, 6 = Agree, 7 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 40 to 280. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Internal / High External Locus of Control: 40 – 120
- Moderate / Mixed Locus of Control: 121 – 200
- High Internal Locus of Control: 201 – 280
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.68 to 0.81 for the subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
