Scale Overview
The Eating Disorder Belief Questionnaire (EDBQ) was developed by Myra Cooper, Myra Cohen-Tovée, Helen Gibb, and Pratima Ramaiya (1997). It is designed to measure Eating disorder beliefs and assumptions. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 32 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Negative Self-Beliefs, Weight and Shape Beliefs, Acceptance by Others, Control Over Eating.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = I don’t usually believe this at all, 100 = I am usually completely convinced that this is true.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Scores range from 0 to 100 for each subscale, calculated as the average of the items. Higher scores indicate stronger endorsement of eating disorder beliefs.: 0 – 100
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from 0.86 to 0.97 for the subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
