Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The EASI-III Temperament Scale was developed by Arnold H. Buss & Robert Plomin (1975). It is designed to measure Temperament. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 50 items organized into 10 factors/subscales: Emotionality – Distress, Emotionality – Fear, Emotionality – Anger, Activity – Tempo, Activity – Vigor, Sociability, Impulsivity – Inhibitory Control, Impulsivity – Decision Time, Impulsivity – Sensation Seeking, Impulsivity – Persistence.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Emotionality – Distress | 1,2,3,4,5 | 5 |
| Emotionality – Fear | 6,7,8,9,10 | 5 |
| Emotionality – Anger | 11,12,13,14,15 | 5 |
| Activity – Tempo | 16,17,18,19,20 | 5 |
| Activity – Vigor | 21,22,23,24,25 | 5 |
| Sociability | 26,27,28,29,30 | 5 |
| Impulsivity – Inhibitory Control | 31,32,33,34,35 | 5 |
| Impulsivity – Decision Time | 36,37,38,39,40 | 5 |
| Impulsivity – Sensation Seeking | 41,42,43,44,45 | 5 |
| Impulsivity – Persistence | 46,47,48,49,50 | 5 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not very characteristic of me, 2 = A little characteristic of me, 3 = Somewhat characteristic of me, 4 = Frequently characteristic of me, 5 = Very characteristic of me.
The scale includes 14 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Emotionality = .80, Activity = .72, Sociability = .69, Impulsivity = .69.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
