Scale Overview
The Early Childhood Educators Confidence in Outdoor Movement, Physical Activity, Sedentary and Screen Behaviors Questionnaire (ECE-COMPASS) was developed by Bruijns, B. A., Johnson, A. M., Burke, S. M., & Tucker, P. (2023). It is designed to measure Teacher Self-Efficacy and Physical Activity Promotion. The scale is intended for use with Early Childhood Educators.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 31 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Task Self-Efficacy, Barrier Self-Efficacy.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not confident at all, 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = Moderately confident, 6 = 6, 7 = 7, 8 = 8, 9 = 9, 10 = Completely confident.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 310. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Efficacy: 0 – 103
- Moderate Self-Efficacy: 104 – 207
- High Self-Efficacy: 208 – 310
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Task Self-Efficacy alpha = 0.94, Barrier Self-Efficacy alpha = 0.92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
