Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Duke University Religion Index – DUREL was developed by Harold G. Koenig, George R. Parkerson, & Keith G. Meador (1997). It is designed to measure Religiosity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Organizational Religiosity (OR), Non-organizational Religiosity (NOR), Intrinsic Religiosity (IR).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Organizational Religiosity (OR) | 1 | 1 |
| Non-organizational Religiosity (NOR) | 2 | 1 |
| Intrinsic Religiosity (IR) | 3,4,5 | 3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: Item 1 = 1 = More than once a week, 2 = Once a week, 3 = A few times a month, 4 = A few times a year, 5 = Once a year or less, 6 = Never, Item 2 = 1 = More than once a day, 2 = Daily, 3 = Two or more times/week, 4 = Once a week, 5 = A few times a month, 6 = Rarely or never, Items 3-5 = 1 = Definitely true of me, 2 = Tends to be true, 3 = Unsure, 4 = Tends not to be true, 5 = Definitely not true.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 5 to 27. Interpretation guidelines:
- High Religiosity: 5 – 11
- Moderate Religiosity: 12 – 20
- Low Religiosity: 21 – 27
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.75 (Intrinsic Religiosity subscale).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
