Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Duke University Religion Index – DUREL was developed by Harold G. Koenig, George R. Parkerson, Keith G. Meador (1997). It is designed to measure Religiosity. The scale is intended for use with Adults (clinical and community populations).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Organizational Religiosity (OR), Non-organizational Religiosity (NOR), Intrinsic Religiosity (IR).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Organizational Religiosity (OR) | 1 | 1 |
| Non-organizational Religiosity (NOR) | 2 | 1 |
| Intrinsic Religiosity (IR) | 3,4,5 | 3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = More than once a week (Item 1) / More than once a day (Item 2) / Definitely true of me (Items 3-5), 2 = Once a week (Item 1) / Daily (Item 2) / Tends to be true (Items 3-5), 3 = A few times a month (Item 1) / Two or more times/week (Item 2) / Unsure (Items 3-5), 4 = A few times a year (Item 1) / Once a week (Item 2) / Tends not to be true (Items 3-5), 5 = Once a year or less (Item 1) / A few times a month (Item 2) / Definitely not true (Items 3-5), 6 = Never (Item 1) / Rarely or never (Item 2).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 5 to 27. Interpretation guidelines:
- Overall score range (lower scores indicate higher religiosity): 5 – 27
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of 0.75 for the intrinsic religiosity subscale.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
