Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Drinking Refusal Self-Efficacy Questionnaire-Revised (DRSEQ-R) was developed by T.P.S. Oei, P.A. Hasking, & R.M. Young (2005). It is designed to measure Drinking refusal self-efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 19 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Social Pressure, Emotional Relief, Opportunistic.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Social Pressure | 1,2,3,4,5 | 5 |
| Emotional Relief | 6,7,8,9,10,11,12 | 7 |
| Opportunistic | 13,14,15,16,17,18,19 | 7 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = I would drink, 2 = I would probably drink, 3 = I might drink, 4 = I might NOT drink, 5 = I would probably NOT drink, 6 = I am sure I would NOT drink.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 19 to 114. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low drinking refusal self-efficacy: 19 – 50
- Moderate drinking refusal self-efficacy: 51 – 82
- High drinking refusal self-efficacy: 83 – 114
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha typically > 0.90).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
