Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Diet Self Efficacy Scale – DIET-SE was developed by Stich, C., Knäuper, B., & Tint, A. (2009). It is designed to measure Dieting Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: High Caloric Food Temptations (HCF), Social and Internal Factors (SIF), Negative Emotional Events (NEE).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| High Caloric Food Temptations (HCF) | 3,6,7,10 | 4 |
| Social and Internal Factors (SIF) | 1,2,5,9 | 4 |
| Negative Emotional Events (NEE) | 4,8,11 | 3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all confident, 2 = Slightly confident, 3 = Moderately confident, 4 = Very confident, 5 = Completely confident.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 11 to 55. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low dieting self-efficacy: 11 – 25
- Moderate dieting self-efficacy: 26 – 40
- High dieting self-efficacy: 41 – 55
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Total scale α = .82 – .87; HCF α = .70 – .77; SIF α = .71 – .79; NEE α = .75 – .79.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
