Diagnostic Assessment of School and Principal Effectiveness – Principal Version (DASPE-P)
A self-report scale designed to assess a principal's perception of their school's effectiveness across goal attainment, adaptation, integration, and maintenance dimensions.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Diagnostic Assessment of School and Principal Effectiveness – Principal Version (DASPE-P) was developed by Ebmeier, H. (1988). It is designed to measure School Effectiveness. The scale is intended for use with School Principals.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 100 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: Goal Attainment, Adaptation, Integration, Maintenance.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Goal Attainment | 6,9,16,20,25,28,36,43,48,52,58,62,81,84,86,93 | 16 |
| Adaptation | 3,5,11,15,27,54,57,61,66,68,70,73,76,77,79,80,87,89,90,92,97,98,99,100 | 24 |
| Integration | 2,4,8,12,13,17,18,21,24,29,31,32,35,38,39,40,41,45,46,47,51,55,56,59,63,65,67,69,74,78,83,85,94,95,96 | 35 |
| Maintenance | 1,7,10,14,19,22,23,26,30,33,34,37,42,44,49,50,53,60,64,71,72,75,82,88,91 | 25 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 21 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 100 to 500. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low School Effectiveness: 100 – 250
- Moderate School Effectiveness: 251 – 375
- High School Effectiveness: 376 – 500
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Alpha coefficients ranged from 0.73 to 0.92 for the principal's instrument..
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 25 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
