Scale Overview
The Coping Behaviours Inventory – CBI was developed by G.K. Litman, J. Stapleton, A.N. Oppenheim, & M. Peleg (1983). It is designed to measure Coping behaviors for relapse prevention. The scale is intended for use with Adults recovering from alcohol dependence.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 36 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Usually, 1 = Often, 2 = Sometimes, 3 = Never.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 108. Interpretation guidelines:
- High Coping Capacity: 0 – 36
- Moderate Coping Capacity: 37 – 72
- Low Coping Capacity: 73 – 108

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Not specified.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
