Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Contraceptive Utilities, Intention, and Knowledge Scale – CUIKS was developed by Larry Condelli (1984). It is designed to measure Contraceptive behavior, attitudes, intentions, and utility perceptions. The scale is intended for use with Women.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 7 factors/subscales: Perceived Susceptibility, Intention, Perceived Severity of Pregnancy, Subjective Normative Support, Perceived Effectiveness, Perceived Convenience, Concern about Side Effects.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Perceived Susceptibility | 1,3 | 2 |
| Intention | 2 | 1 |
| Perceived Severity of Pregnancy | 4 | 1 |
| Subjective Normative Support | 5,6,7,8 | 4 |
| Perceived Effectiveness | 9,11,13,15 | 4 |
| Perceived Convenience | 10,12,14,16 | 4 |
| Concern about Side Effects | 17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24 | 8 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Low / Opposed / Effective / Not concerned, 2 = Somewhat low / Opposed / Effective / Slightly unconcerned, 3 = Neutral / Unsure, 4 = Somewhat high / In favor / Ineffective / Pretty concerned, 5 = High / In favor / Ineffective / Very concerned.
The scale includes 8 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of KR-20 of .62 reported for the knowledge subscale; attitudinal subscales validated via predictive behavioral regression..
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
