Scale Overview
The Contraceptive Self-Efficacy Scale – CSE was developed by Ruth Andrea Levinson (1986). It is designed to measure Contraceptive Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Sexually active young women.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 18 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all True of Me, 2 = Slightly True of Me, 3 = Somewhat True of Me, 4 = Mostly True of Me, 5 = Completely True of Me.
The scale includes 9 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 18 to 90. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Contraceptive Self-Efficacy: 18 – 42
- Moderate Contraceptive Self-Efficacy: 43 – 66
- High Contraceptive Self-Efficacy: 67 – 90
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .73 or higher.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
