Scale Overview
The Command Safety Assessment Survey – CSAS was developed by Naval Postgraduate School (2011). It is designed to measure Safety Climate. The scale is intended for use with Military aviation personnel.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 7 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Quality Assurance, Reward System, Command and Control, Process Auditing, Risk Management.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Quality Assurance | 1,5 | 2 |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Poor Safety Climate: 1 – 2
- Moderate Safety Climate: 2 – 3
- Strong Safety Climate: 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Construct validity supported for a 12-item subset of the original 61-item tool.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
