Scale Overview
The Collaborative Parent Involvement Scale – CPIS was developed by Nansel, Rovner, Haynie, Iannotti, Simons-Morton, Wysocki, Anderson, Weissberg-Benchell, & Laffel (2009). It is designed to measure Collaborative parent involvement in pediatric type 1 diabetes management. The scale is intended for use with Youths with type 1 diabetes.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Almost Never, 2 = Sometimes, 3 = Often, 4 = Almost Always, 5 = Always.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 12 to 60. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Collaborative Involvement: 12 – 27
- Moderate Collaborative Involvement: 28 – 44
- High Collaborative Involvement: 45 – 60
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha typically reported > 0.80).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
