Scale Overview
The Cognitive Abilities Scale (F-JAS Self-Report) was developed by Fleishman, E. A., & Reilly, M. E. (1992). It is designed to measure Self-perceived cognitive abilities. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 7 factors/subscales: Verbal Abilities, Idea Generation and Reasoning, Memory, Quantitative Abilities, Perceptual Abilities, Spatial Abilities, Attentiveness.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Describes me extremely poorly, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = Describes me extremely well.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 21 to 147. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low perceived cognitive ability: 21 – 63
- Moderate perceived cognitive ability: 64 – 105
- High perceived cognitive ability: 106 – 147
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of .84 (time 1) and .83 (time 2).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 8 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
