Scale Overview
The Christian Spiritual Surrender Scale (CSSS) was developed by Laura Shannonhouse, Jason McMartin, Shane J. Sacco, M. Elizabeth Lewis Hall, Crystal L. Park, Dahee Kim, Eric Silverman, Kelly Kapic, Jamie Aten (2023). It is designed to measure Christian Spiritual Surrender. The scale is intended for use with Christian adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Strongly disagree, 1 = Disagree, 2 = Neutral, 3 = Agree, 4 = Strongly agree.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 40. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Spiritual Surrender: 0 – 10
- Moderate-Low Spiritual Surrender: 11 – 20
- Moderate-High Spiritual Surrender: 21 – 30
- High Spiritual Surrender: 31 – 40
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.93.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
