Scale Overview
The Children’s Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale – Symptom Checklist (CY-BOCS) was developed by Goodman, W. K., Price, L. H., Rasmussen, S. A. et al. (1989). It is designed to measure Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Symptoms. The scale is intended for use with Children and adolescents (ages 4 to 18).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 58 items organized into 17 factors/subscales: Washing/Cleaning Compulsions, Checking Compulsions, Repeating Compulsions, Counting Compulsions, Arranging/Symmetry Compulsions, Hoarding/Saving Compulsions, Excessive Games/Superstitious Behaviours, Rituals Involving Other Persons, Miscellaneous Compulsions, Contamination Obsessions, Aggressive Obsessions, Hoarding/Saving Obsessions, Health-Related Obsessions, Religious/Moral Obsessions, Magical Obsessions, Sexual Obsessions, Miscellaneous Obsessions.

Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 58. Interpretation guidelines:
- Total number of active symptom types endorsed (higher scores indicate a wider variety of symptoms): 0 – 58
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
