Scale Overview
The Cancer Behavior Inventory–Brief Version (CBI-B) was developed by Carla A. Heitzmann, Thomas V. Merluzzi, Patrick Jean-Pierre, Joseph A. Roscoe, Kenneth L. Kirsh, Steven D. Passik (2011). It is designed to measure Coping Self-Efficacy. The scale is intended for use with Adult cancer patients.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all confident, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7, 8 = 8, 9 = Totally confident.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 14 to 126. Interpretation guidelines:
- Overall Coping Self-Efficacy (higher scores indicate greater confidence in coping with cancer): 14 – 126
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 3 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
