Scale Overview
The Burnout Measure, Short Version – BMS was developed by Ayala Malach-Pines (2005). It is designed to measure Burnout. The scale is intended for use with Working adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 10 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Almost never, 3 = Rarely, 4 = Sometimes, 5 = Often, 6 = Very often, 7 = Always.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low level of burnout: 1 – 2
- Moderate level of burnout: 2 – 3
- High level of burnout: 3 – 4
- Very high level of burnout: 4 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.85-0.92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
