Scale Overview
The Burnout Measure – BM was developed by Ayala M. Pines & Elliot Aronson (1988). It is designed to measure Burnout. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Never, 2 = Once in a great while, 3 = Rarely, 4 = Sometimes, 5 = Often, 6 = Usually, 7 = Always.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 21 to 147. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Burnout: 21 – 50
- Moderate Burnout: 51 – 71
- High Burnout: 72 – 92
- Severe Burnout: 93 – 113
- Very Severe Burnout: 114 – 147
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranged from .88 to .95.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
