The Brief Self-Compassion Inventory – BSCI was developed by Kelly Chinh, Wei Wu, Shelley A. Johns, Patrick V. Stutz, John H. McGrew, Catherine E. Mosher (2023). It is designed to measure Self-Compassion. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = A little, 3 = Moderately, 4 = Mostly, 5 = Very much.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 5 to 25. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Self-Compassion: 5 – 11
- Moderate Self-Compassion: 12 – 18
- High Self-Compassion: 19 – 25
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha of 0.90.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
