Scale Overview
The Brief Edinburgh Depression Scale – BEDS was developed by M. Lloyd-Williams, C. Shiels, C. Dowrick (2007). It is designed to measure Depression. The scale is intended for use with Patients with advanced cancer.

This instrument consists of 6 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = No, never / Not at all / Coping as well as ever, 1 = Not very often / A little / Hardly ever / Coped quite well, 2 = Yes, some of the time / Quite often / Sometimes / Not coping as well as usual, 3 = Yes, most of the time / Very definitely / Not able to cope at all.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 18. Interpretation guidelines:
- Not indicative of depression: 0 – 5
- Indicative of depression: 6 – 18
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
