Brief Body Sensations Interpretations Questionnaire – BBSIQ
Measures the tendency to catastrophically misinterpret bodily sensations and external events.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Brief Body Sensations Interpretations Questionnaire – BBSIQ was developed by Clark, D. M., Salkovskis, P. M., Ost, L. G., Breitholtz, E., Koehler, K. A., Westling, B. E., & Gelder, M. (1997). It is designed to measure Catastrophic misinterpretation of bodily sensations. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Panic Body Sensations, External Events.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Panic Body Sensations | 2,3,5,8,11,12,14 | 7 |
| External Events | 1,4,6,7,9,10,13 | 7 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Ranked third (least likely to come to mind), 2 = Ranked second, 3 = Ranked first (most likely to come to mind).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 7 to 21. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low catastrophic misinterpretation tendency: 7 – 11
- Moderate catastrophic misinterpretation tendency: 12 – 16
- High catastrophic misinterpretation tendency: 17 – 21
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Good internal consistency and test-retest reliability.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
