Scale Overview
The Body Investment Scale – BIS was developed by Israel Orbach & Mario Mikulincer (1998). It is designed to measure Body investment and body experience. The scale is intended for use with Adults and adolescents.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 24 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: body image feelings and attitudes, comfort in touch, body care, body protection.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 9 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 24 to 120. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low body investment: 24 – 56
- Moderate body investment: 57 – 88
- High body investment: 89 – 120
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
