Scale Overview
The Black Spiritual Creativity Scale – Revised (BSCS-R) was developed by Danielle Drake, Lauren Mizock, Thema Bryant-Davis, April Harris-Britt (2025). It is designed to measure Spiritual creativity, cultural empowerment, resistance, and liberation. The scale is intended for use with African American adults.

This instrument consists of 15 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Cultural Empowerment, Resistance and Liberation.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Slightly Disagree, 4 = Slightly Agree, 5 = Agree, 6 = Strongly Agree.
The scale includes 1 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 15 to 90. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Spiritual Creativity: 15 – 39
- Moderate Spiritual Creativity: 40 – 65
- High Spiritual Creativity: 66 – 90

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Total scale α = .932, Resistance and Liberation α = .928, Personal and Communal Transformation α = .883.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
