Scale Overview
The BIO-WELL Scale (BIO-WELL) was developed by Katherine N. Irvine, Jessica C. Fisher, Phoebe R. Bentley, Maximillian Nawrath, Martin Dallimer, Gail E. Austen, Rob Fish, Zoe G. Davies (2023). It is designed to measure Human wellbeing responses to biodiversity. The scale is intended for use with Adults (18 years and older).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 17 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Biodiversity Metrics, Biodiversity Attributes.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Negative Wellbeing (Tense / Sad / Muddled / Closed / Disconnected), 50 = Neutral, 100 = Positive Wellbeing (Relaxed / Joyful / Clear minded / Open / Connected).
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 0 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Negative Wellbeing Response: 0 – 49
- Neutral Response: 50 – 50
- Positive Wellbeing Response: 51 – 100
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
