Scale Overview
The Berlin Emotional Responses to Risk Instrument (BERRI) was developed by Dafina Petrova, Edward T. Cokely, Agata Sobkow, Jakub Traczyk, Dunia Garrido, Rocio Garcia-Retamero (2023). It is designed to measure Anticipatory Affective Reactions. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 6 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Positive Affective Reactions (BERRI-pos), Negative Affective Reactions (BERRI-neg).
| Factor / Subscale |
Items |
N |
| Positive Affective Reactions (BERRI-pos) |
1,2,3 |
3 |
| Negative Affective Reactions (BERRI-neg) |
4,5,6 |
3 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = , 3 = , 4 = , 5 = , 6 = , 7 = Extremely.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 3 to 21. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low emotional response: 3 – 9
- Moderate emotional response: 10 – 15
- High emotional response: 16 – 21
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha > 0.65.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 1 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
