Scale Overview
The Berkman-Syme Social Network Index and Social Support Measure was developed by Lisa F. Berkman & Lester Breslow (1983). It is designed to measure Social Support and Social Integration. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Social Networks, Perceived Social Support.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = None / No / Never, 1 = 1 or 2 / Yes / Once or twice a year, 2 = 3 to 5 / Every few months, 3 = 6 to 9 / Once or twice a month, 4 = 10 or more / Once a week, 5 = More than once a week.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Most socially isolated: 0 – 1
- Increasing social connectedness: 2 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
