Scale Overview
The Berkman-Syme Social Network Index and Social Support Measure was developed by Lisa F. Berkman, S. Leonard Syme (1979). It is designed to measure Social Networks and Social Support. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 11 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Social Network, Social Integration, Perceived Social Support.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = None / No / Never, 1 = 1-2 / Yes / Once or twice a year, 2 = 3-5 / Every few months, 3 = 6-9 / Once or twice a month, 4 = 10 or more / Once a week, 5 = More than once a week.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Most isolated: 0 – 1
- Increasing social connectedness: 2 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
