Scale Overview
The Benefit Finding Scale – BFS was developed by Vicki Helgeson, Charles S. Carver, Michael H. Antoni (2004). It is designed to measure Benefit Finding. The scale is intended for use with Breast cancer patients and survivors.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 17 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not at all, 2 = A little, 3 = Moderately, 4 = Quite a bit, 5 = Extremely.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 17 to 85. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low benefit finding: 17 – 39
- Moderate benefit finding: 40 – 62
- High benefit finding: 63 – 85
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (single-factor structure).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
