The Belief in Collective Emotions Scale – BCES was developed by Stephen Reysen & Nyla R. Branscombe (2008). It is designed to measure Belief in collective emotions. The scale is intended for use with General population.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly Disagree, 2 = Disagree, 3 = Somewhat Disagree, 4 = Neutral, 5 = Somewhat Agree, 6 = Agree, 7 = Strongly Agree.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 7. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low belief in collective emotions: 1 – 3
- Moderate/Neutral belief in collective emotions: 4 – 4
- High belief in collective emotions: 5 – 7
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.83.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 2 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
