Scale Overview
The Belief in Afterlife Scale (BA) was developed by Michael Osarchuk & Sherman J. Tatz (1973). It is designed to measure Belief in Afterlife. The scale is intended for use with Adults.

This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Form A, Form B.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Total disagreement, 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = 4, 5 = 5, 6 = 6, 7 = 7, 8 = 8, 9 = 9, 10 = Total agreement.
The scale includes 13 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 100. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low belief in afterlife (per form): 0 – 33
- Moderate belief in afterlife (per form): 34 – 66
- High belief in afterlife (per form): 67 – 100
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of 0.89.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
