Scale Overview
The Behavioral Regulation in Exercise Questionnaire-2 (BREQ-2) was developed by David Markland & Vanessa Tobin (2004). It is designed to measure Exercise Motivation. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 19 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Amotivation, External Regulation, Introjected Regulation, Identified Regulation, Intrinsic Motivation.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Not true for me, 1 = 1, 2 = 2, 3 = 3, 4 = Very true for me.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Subscale score range (calculated as the mean of the subscale items): 0 – 4
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Amotivation (0.83), External Regulation (0.79), Introjected Regulation (0.80), Identified Regulation (0.73), Intrinsic Motivation (0.86).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
