Scale Overview
The Aviation Safety Locus of Control Scale – ASLOC was developed by Hunter, D. R. (2002). It is designed to measure Aviation Safety Locus of Control. The scale is intended for use with Pilots.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 20 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Internal Locus of Control, External Locus of Control.
| Factor / Subscale |
Items |
N |
| Internal Locus of Control |
1,3,4,6,8,10,11,14,17,19 |
10 |
| External Locus of Control |
2,5,7,9,12,13,15,16,18,20 |
10 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 10 to 50. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low (for either subscale): 10 – 25
- Moderate (for either subscale): 26 – 35
- High (for either subscale): 36 – 50
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Internal subscale alpha = 0.69, External subscale alpha = 0.63.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
