Scale Overview
The Attitudes Towards Social Issues scale – ATSI was developed by A. Ellerman (1996). It is designed to measure Ethnocentrism. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 40 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Strongly agree, 2 = Agree, 3 = Slightly agree, 4 = Neither agree nor disagree, 5 = Slightly disagree, 6 = Disagree, 7 = Strongly disagree.
The scale includes 20 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 40 to 280. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Ethnocentrism / High Tolerance: 40 – 120
- Moderate Ethnocentrism: 121 – 200
- High Ethnocentrism: 201 – 280
