Scale Overview
The Attitudes toward the LDS Church Scale was developed by Hardy (1949). It is designed to measure Attitude toward the LDS Church. The scale is intended for use with LDS Church members aged 15 and older.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 90 items organized into 4 factors/subscales: General Religion, LDS Beliefs, LDS Practices and Programs, General LDS Attitudes.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a dichotomous Yes/No format.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 11. Interpretation guidelines:
- Completely orthodox church member: 1 – 2
- Orthodox member with some reservations: 2 – 4
- Rather unorthodox, but with favorable leanings: 4 – 6
- Unorthodox, member in name only: 6 – 11
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Split-half reliability of .95.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
