Scale Overview
The Attitudes Toward Lesbians and Gay Men Scale – Revised 5-Item Version (ATLG-R-S5) was developed by Gregory M. Herek & Kevin A. McLemore (2011). It is designed to measure Sexual prejudice / Attitudes toward gay men and lesbians. The scale is intended for use with Heterosexual adults.

This instrument consists of 10 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Attitudes Toward Gay Men (ATG-R-S5), Attitudes Toward Lesbians (ATL-R-S5).

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 5 to 35. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low negative attitudes (more positive/tolerant): 5 – 15
- Moderate negative attitudes: 16 – 25
- High negative attitudes (more prejudiced): 26 – 35
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of α > .80.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
