The Attitudes About Sadomasochism Scale – ASMS was developed by Megan R. Yost (2010). It is designed to measure Prejudicial attitudes about sadomasochism. The scale is intended for use with Adults.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Disagree Strongly, 2 = Disagree Moderately, 3 = Disagree Mildly, 4 = Neither Agree nor Disagree, 5 = Agree Mildly, 6 = Agree Moderately, 7 = Agree Strongly.
The scale includes 4 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 23 to 161. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low prejudice / Positive attitudes: 23 – 69
- Moderate prejudice / Neutral attitudes: 70 – 115
- High prejudice / Negative attitudes: 116 – 161
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha: .78 to .92 across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
