Scale Overview
The Attitude toward the Church Scale was developed by L. L. Thurstone and E. J. Chave (1929). It is designed to measure Attitude toward the church. The scale is intended for use with General population.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Disagree, 1 = Agree.
The scale includes 28 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 0 to 11. Interpretation guidelines:
- Favorable attitude toward the church: 0 – 3
- Neutral or mixed attitude toward the church: 4 – 7
- Unfavorable attitude toward the church: 8 – 11
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High test-retest reliability.
Administration
