Scale Overview
The Attitude Toward Interpersonal Peer Violence scale – ATIPV was developed by Houston Community Demonstration Project / Slaby RG (1993). It is designed to measure Attitudes toward peer violence and non-violent conflict resolution. The scale is intended for use with Adolescents (specifically middle school students, grades 6-8).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 14 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Disagree a lot, 2 = Disagree a little, 3 = Agree a little, 4 = Agree a lot.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Item scores are averaged to produce a mean score.
Total scores range from 1 to 4. Interpretation guidelines:
- Violent orientation / Low non-violent conflict resolution skills: 1 – 2
- Moderate non-violent conflict resolution skills: 2 – 3
- Non-violent orientation / High non-violent conflict resolution skills: 3 – 4
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
