Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Asset-Based Identities Measure (ABIM) was developed by Francesca López, DeLeon Gray, Mildred Boveda, Dynah Oviedo, Nilam Ram, Lorenzo López (2024). It is designed to measure Asset-Based Teaching Practices. The scale is intended for use with K-12 Students.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 21 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Belonging, Competence and Task Value, Intersectional Identities.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Belonging | 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 | 8 |
| Competence and Task Value | 9,10,11,12 | 4 |
| Intersectional Identities | 13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21 | 9 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: -4 = Strongly Disagree, -3 = Disagree, -2 = Moderately Disagree, -1 = Slightly Disagree, 0 = Neither Agree nor Disagree, 1 = Slightly Agree, 2 = Moderately Agree, 3 = Agree, 4 = Strongly Agree.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from -84 to 84. Interpretation guidelines:
- Strong Disagreement / Low Asset-Based Perception: -84 – -22
- Neutral / Mixed Perception: -21 – 21
- Strong Agreement / High Asset-Based Perception: 22 – 84
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Full scale α = .94, Belonging α = .90, Competence α = .77, Intersectionality α = .84.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
