Asian American Multidimensional Acculturation Scale – AAMAS
Measures the multidimensional acculturation and enculturation of Asian Americans across culture of origin, other Asian American cultures, and European American culture.
Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Asian American Multidimensional Acculturation Scale – AAMAS was developed by Chung, R. C. Y., Kim, B. S. K., & Abreu, J. M. (2004). It is designed to measure Acculturation and Enculturation. The scale is intended for use with Asian Americans.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Culture of Origin (AAMAS-CO), Asian American (AAMAS-AA), European American (AAMAS-EA).
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Culture of Origin (AAMAS-CO) | 1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25,28,31,34,37,40,43 | 15 |
| Asian American (AAMAS-AA) | 2,5,8,11,14,17,20,23,26,29,32,35,38,41,44 | 15 |
| European American (AAMAS-EA) | 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27,30,33,36,39,42,45 | 15 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 1 = Not very well / Not at all, 2 = 2, 3 = Somewhat, 4 = 4, 5 = Very well / Very much, 6 = 6.
The scale includes 3 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 15 to 90. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Identification / Acculturation: 15 – 40
- Moderate Identification / Acculturation: 41 – 65
- High Identification / Acculturation: 66 – 90
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Cronbach's alpha ranges from .76 to .91 across subscales.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
