Scale Overview
The Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI) was developed by Peter Glick and Susan T. Fiske (1996). It is designed to measure Ambivalent Sexism. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 22 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Hostile Sexism, Benevolent Sexism.
| Factor / Subscale |
Items |
N |
| Hostile Sexism |
2,4,5,7,10,11,14,15,16,18,21 |
11 |
| Benevolent Sexism |
1,3,6,8,9,12,13,17,19,20,22 |

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Disagree strongly, 1 = Disagree somewhat, 2 = Disagree slightly, 3 = Agree slightly, 4 = Agree somewhat, 5 = Agree strongly.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Very Low Sexism (Average Score): 0 – 1
- Moderate Sexism (Average Score): 2 – 3
- High Sexism (Average Score): 4 – 5
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Hostile Sexism alpha: 0.83-0.92, Benevolent Sexism alpha: 0.73-0.92.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 7 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
