Scale Development & Technical Details
Scale Overview
The Ambivalent Sexism Inventory – ASI was developed by Peter Glick & Susan T. Fiske (1996). It is designed to measure Ambivalent Sexism. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 22 items organized into 2 factors/subscales: Hostile Sexism, Benevolent Sexism.
| Factor / Subscale | Items | N |
|---|---|---|
| Hostile Sexism | 2,4,5,7,10,11,14,15,16,18,21 | 11 |
| Benevolent Sexism | 1,3,6,8,9,12,13,17,19,20,22 | 11 |
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = Disagree strongly, 1 = Disagree somewhat, 2 = Disagree slightly, 3 = Agree slightly, 4 = Agree somewhat, 5 = Agree strongly.
The scale includes 6 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 0 to 5. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low levels of sexist attitudes: 0 – 1
- Moderate levels of sexist attitudes: 1 – 3
- High levels of sexist attitudes: 3 – 5
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
