The Altman Self-Rating Mania Scale – ASRM was developed by Edward G. Altman, Donald Hedeker, Jan L. Peterson, John M. Davis (1997). It is designed to measure Mania and hypomania severity. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 5 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = No change / Not more than usual, 1 = Occasionally (once or twice), 2 = Often (several times or more), 3 = Frequently (most of the time), 4 = Constantly / All of the time.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 20. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low probability of mania or hypomania: 0 – 5
- High probability of mania or hypomania (clinical evaluation recommended): 6 – 20
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Mania alpha = 0.79.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
