Scale Overview
The Affective Work Competencies Inventory (AWCI) was developed by P. E. Brauchle, G. C. Petty (1983). It is designed to measure Affective work competencies. The scale is intended for use with Workers, supervisors, and vocational educators.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 45 items organized into 5 factors/subscales: Ambition, Self-Control, Organization, Enthusiasm, Conscientiousness.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 5 = Strongly Agree).
The scale includes 19 reverse-scored items to reduce acquiescence bias.
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 45 to 225. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Affective Work Competency: 45 – 90
- Below Average Affective Work Competency: 91 – 135
- Average Affective Work Competency: 136 – 180
- High Affective Work Competency: 181 – 225
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of KR-20: Ambition (0.64), Self-control (0.80), Organization (0.76), Enthusiasm (0.89), Conscientiousness (0.79).
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
