Scale Overview
The Aesthetic Needs Scale (ANS) was developed by Świątek, Agata Hiacynta; Szcześniak, Małgorzata; Borkowska, Hanna; Stempień, Michał; Wojtkowiak, Karolina; Diessner, Rhett (2024). It is designed to measure Aesthetic Needs. The scale is intended for use with Adults.
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 12 items organized into 3 factors/subscales: Need for contact with aesthetic creations, Need to aestheticize everyday life, Need to aestheticize the built and natural environments.

Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a 7-point Likert scale (1 = Strongly Disagree to 7 = Strongly Agree).
Scoring
Items are scored by subscale, with each subscale sum representing a distinct dimension.
Total scores range from 12 to 84. Interpretation guidelines:
- Low Aesthetic Needs: 12 – 36
- Moderate Aesthetic Needs: 37 – 60
- High Aesthetic Needs: 61 – 84
Psychometric Properties
Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of Total score: α = 0.89; Need for contact with works of art: α = 0.90; Need to aestheticize everyday life: α = 0.86; Need to aestheticize built and natural environments: α = 0.88.
Administration
The scale is self-administered and typically takes approximately 5 minutes to complete. It can be administered individually or in group settings. No special training is required for administration.
