The Adult Separation Anxiety Questionnaire – ASA-27 was developed by Manicavasagar, V., Silove, D., Wagner, R., & Drobny, J. (2003). It is designed to measure Adult Separation Anxiety. The scale is intended for use with Adults (18 years and older).
Scale Structure
This instrument consists of 27 items.
Response Format
Respondents rate each item using a custom response format.
Response anchors: 0 = This has never happened, 1 = This happens occasionally, 2 = This happens fairly often, 3 = This happens very often.
Scoring
Items are summed to produce a total score.
Total scores range from 0 to 81. Interpretation guidelines:
- Below clinical threshold: 0 – 21
- Elevated adult separation anxiety (suggestive of separation anxiety disorder): 22 – 81

Internal Consistency: The scale has demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency with reported Cronbach’s alpha values of High internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha typically > 0.90).
